ENGLAND 2 ROMANIA 3
Romania won through to the EURO 2000™ quarter-finals in dramatic fashion as a last-gasp Ionel Ganea penalty put England to the sword in Charleroi on Tuesday. The Romanians were heading out of the tournament until the 89th minute when Ganea scored from the spot to settle a match in which the lead changed hands three times.
In the other Group A match, Portugal made it three wins out of three by crushing Germany 3-0 in Rotterdam thanks to a Sergio Conceicão hat-trick. Portugal will meet Turkey in the quarter-finals while Romania will face Italy. The Italians topped Group B with three straight wins while Turkey raised more eyebrows than a Roger Moore convention with the 2-0 victory over co-hosts Belgium that put them into the last eight.
There should be an exciting finish to Group C where Yugoslavia are top with four points to Spain's and Norway's three. Wednesday's final pair of matches promise much excitement as all four teams have a chance of qualifying. Yugoslavia meet Spain in Bruges while Slovenia take on Norway in Arnhem. Later on Wednesday, The Netherlands and France meet in Amsterdam to decide who will enter the last eight as group winners, while Denmark and the Czech Republic play for third place in Liège.
